Upgrade to MapGuide Enterprise 2011 from 2010

We’ll I upgraded www.mapguide.ca to MapGuide Enterprise 2011 yesterday.

It went pretty well, I just:

  • Exported the MGP file of the site using the MapGuide Site Administrator
  • Backed up any files I put in the “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\MapGuideEnterprise2010\WebServerExtensions\www\”  folder
  • Installed MapGuide Server and Web Extension (I am using PHP and Apache)
  • Copied the MGP file into the new Packages folder (“C:\Program Files\Autodesk\MapGuideEnterprise2010\Server\Packages\”)
  • Used the MapGuide Site Administrator to load the package
  • Pasted the files into the www folder
  • Reviewed all my code to ensure the webconfig.ini is found (“C:\Program Files\Autodesk\MapGuideEnterprise2010\WebServerExtensions\www\web.conifg”)
  • I had to set up my License Manager

The one thing I really love is the MapGuide Studio 2011 (not just for working in 64 bit!) is the Google/Bing/Yahoo integration.

They work beautifully – and I don’t have to program this anymore!!  Just when I was getting a handle on OpenLayer.org too!

Me trying to import the package to 2011 resulted in an error in DWF module saying the buffer is too small. And can’t find any information about this. There should be a way to copy the repository files to 2011, trying that next. Looks like the upgrade isn’t always as smooth as it could be 😛

Perhaps the files are too big for the default mapguide directory?

Hi Gordon, do you see a significant performance gain with the 64-bit MGE 2011 on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit server? as compared with the 32-bit MGE 2011 if on a same physical server box? It seems to have some issues in properly configuring the 64-bit MGE 2011 and I wonder if it’s worth upgrading for now? We have another upgrade option on (32-bit, of course) MGE 2010 Update2. We have two new servers pending for MGE installs: 32-bit vs 64-bit: namely MGE 2010 Update2 vs MGE 2011 for our Beta Public VanMap (vancouver.ca/vanmap). Your expereience is much appreciated. BTW, did you try 64-bit MGE 2011 on Win Server 2008 SP2 64-bit server? My understanding is that Win Server 2008 SP2 may not support 64-bit MGE 2011, and Win Server 2008 R2 64-bit does, right?

The upgrade is not that simple for those who developed an environment around previous versions of Mapguide. This involves a substantial amount of code editing, not to mention the changes in the Mapguide Web API.

Trying to simply copy repository from MGE 2010 over to new server with 2011 64Bit. As soon as repository folders are copies MGE service shuts down and wont start again. If I copy old repository cack all is well again. In 09 you needed to upgrade repository , this is not necessay in 11. Am I missing something ?

Usually, I just copy the package over. The two things that are missing are (1) the MapGuide Administrator users and (2) Aliases for unmanages resources (SHP,SDF and Raster) when you migrate this way.
